Board Certification in Practice With Children and Their Families

This new specialty credential allows advanced clinical social workers to be recognized for proficiency in the crucial area of practice with children and their families. It is based on practice competences identified in the position statement, Practice with Children & Their Families: A Specialty of Clinical Social Work (PDF).

Applicants need to meet the ABE criteria for board certification as an advanced clinical social worker in addition to the following eligibility criteria:

Specialty Practice Experience:

• In the past year, at least 500 hours devoted to working with children and their families (refer to ABE’s Description of Clinical Social Worker Specialty Practice with Children & Their Families (PDF))
• In the past ten years, amassed at least 4,500 hours of specialty practice with children and their families (including the 500 hours of current practice above)

Consultation or Supervision:

• At any time or over any time-span, amassed at least 24 hours of consultation or supervision in specialty practice with children and their families.
• At the time of specialty consultation/supervision, the provider had completed at least five years of post-graduate practice, held state licensure in good standing at the highest clinical level (or received official exemption therefrom), and was an advanced Clinical Social Worker or a Psychiatrist (M.D. or D.O.) or a Clinical Psychologist (doctoral level) whose practice involved children & their families at a significant level (about 20% of client base on average).

Continuing Education:

• In the past three (3) years, at least 20 clock hours of your clinical continuing education focused on practice with children and their families.

Evaluators:

• Two successful Colleague Evaluations (refer to Qualifications of Your Evaluators (PDF)).
Please note: to retain this specialty credential, annual recertification is required, based on the following:
• Currency of practice (minimum of 300 practice hours required, at least half of which must apply to this specialty);
• Clinical continuing education (minimum of 20 hours of such CE, of which at least 25% must apply to this specialty);
• Highest clinical-level state licensure in good standing;
• Adherence to ABE’s Code of Ethics.
